Ah yes, we get this question a lot. And we like to help people. We’re kind of like a superhero, except we don’t wear tights or giant boots. Though if we did, we’d go for more of a Ziggy Stardust look.

(Drat, now Pablo is humming “Lady Stardust.” It’s a good song. Spotify it, or whatever.)

So you’d like to attend fashion week.

Why not?

What could be better than standing in an hour-long line to be yelled at by surly photographers who want you out of their shots, to watch a show that lasts the length of time it takes to eat a Snickers bar, in a room filled with deafening music?

But we kid. Sort of. Of course being at a live runway show is a lot of fun. (Even if — as our editor Samuel is always pointing out, as Pablo sits behind a solitary computer with an aching back, uploading pictures — reporting from shows is actually a lot of hard work.)

HOW TO ATTEND FASHION WEEK

Short answer: The official Big 4 events (New York, London, Milan, Paris), are open to press and buyers only. (London Fashion Week is the closest exception, as they have an official open-to-the-public event. See below.) So you’ll need to show proof you’re with the press, or a buyer.

And even then, you might not get an invite to the REALLY big names (Chanel, Gucci, Dior, etc.). Especially if you’re from a smaller outlet.

But that doesn’t mean there aren’t ways to see fashion shows happening in those cities, or happening during fashion week.

MILAN

In the past, designers like Cavalli and have given tickets to organizations like The Happy Hearts Fund (run by Czech model Petra Nemcova to support children affected by disasters) and the Boost Foundation. These organizations, in turn, have auctioned the tickets off to raise money for their causes.

But be forewarned: we’ve seen bidding for one of these tickets start at $5,700! (Agh!) Though we’ve also heard prices as low as $450 quoted. So you can check those sites, or Google “fashion week tickets” and “auction.” (And “Milan.”)

PARIS

Let’s be frank: Paris is an even tougher nut to crack. You won’t even be considered without a Paris address. But don’t despair completely. Pablo’s first runway show was technically a “trunk show” at the Galeries Lafayette. Anyone can attend; it happens weekly and is a lot of fun. But you’ll have to email in advance for a reservation.

Okay, technically it’s not true “semaine de la mode” (fashion week), but it’s still top-label stuff, still Paris, and you don’t have to wait for shows in summer, February or September to attend. You don’t have to live in Paris. And you will have fun.

Afterward, go to Harry’s New York Bar, down the street. Coco Chanel and Hemingway used to have coffee and / or booze there. Isn’t that reason enough?

NEW YORK

You may have thought New York would be a bit more hospitable. Wait, why are you laughing so hard?

Aanyway, if you want to buy tickets to New York Fashion Week (the proper series of events), you’re out of luck, my friend. Again, it’s for press and buyers only. (Of course if you’re a celebrity, that could certainly help.)

But if you’re willing to spend money to see some strong up-and-coming designers, you can always buy a ticket to Couture Fashion Week in New York, a for-profit venture that seems to put on a pretty good production. We’ve never attended one of their events, so we can’t personally recommend you buy a ticket there. You might have fun, though. Tickets start at $70 and go all the way to $5,000 for a “Platinum VIP 3-day press.”

Yes, you can buy tickets to a portion of LFW. London Fashion Week’s official open-to-the-public event is London Fashion Weekend. And you can buy tickets. So rejoice.

The Backstory

Mercedes-Benz recently signed a three-year deal for title sponsorship of Russian Fashion Week – the key event in the Russian fashion industry and the largest fashion week in Eastern Europe.

Russian Fashion Week had been held in Moscow for the last ten years in early April and mid-October.

During this period, RFW has discovered dozens of new designers and has presented over sixty international designers to the Russian market.

From the very first day, RFW was aimed at supporting and promoting Russian fashion and has increased interest in Russian designers both at home and abroad. Partnerships and joint projects between RFW and fashion weeks in Milan, London, Beijing, Athens, Lisbon and other cities have turned Moscow into a major European fashion center. In addition, Russian Fashion Week has become a central event for all former Soviet republics – the best designers from the Ukraine, Belarus and other countries showcase their collections at Russian Fashion Week in Moscow. The collaboration between RFW and Mercedes-Benz will make it possible to bring the young Russian fashion industry to an even higher level and wider audience.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Russia will occupy a special position in the international fashion calendar, not only due to the presence of Mercedes-Benz, but also, primarily, due to the fact that the German auto manufacturer supports the most influential fashion events in the world.

Fashion is the key communication platform for Mercedes-Benz. Mercedes-Benz cars are exhibited at fashion weeks in Milan, Paris and London, where the German brand is a strategic partner. Changing its name to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Russia, Russian Fashion Week elevates itself to sit alongside Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York and Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin. “Russia is a fast-growing market for our cars, and Moscow – the next hot fashion destination. Our participation in fashion week is vivid proof of these two axioms, – CEO of Mercedes-Benz Russian Juergen Sauer says. – The signing of this agreement is a logical development of Mercedes-Benz’s global strategy to support the most important fashion weeks in the world. I’m confident that we can strengthen the potential of Russian Fashion Week, as we did, for example, in New York and Berlin”.

“The participation of Mercedes-Benz in RFW will give, in addition to the obvious benefits, an even more acute sense of fashion and style,” said Alexander Shumsky, CEO of Artefact Communications Agency, General Producer of Russian Fashion Week. For the national ‘fashion consciousness’ and development is it important to be on the same catwalk with the legends and trendy designers, such as participants of the previous RFW – Vivienne Westwood, Jeremy Scott, JC de Castelbajac. Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Russia will affirm Moscow’s position on the world fashion map.”

The agreement between RFW and Mercedes-Benz was negotiated by IMG Fashion, which commercially represents the event.

HOW DO I BUY TICKETS TO FASHION WEEK?

Oh, beautiful reader: if only it were that simple. We have a longer answer here (and note how our crudely Photoshopped picture of Bowie holding tickets was supposed to draw the eye, obviating the aforementioned buckets o’ email), but the gist is actually quite simple:

- Except for London’s open-to-the-public “fashion weekend”, fashion week is mainly for industry only: i.e., for buyers and the press.

Unless you see it online here, of course. But you knew that already, right. Right? (::bats eyelashes:: or :shakes fist::)

The “Big 4″ fashion weeks are getting set to roll-in again, beginning with London: Men’s Collections on January 7, 2013.

More than a few shows will be live-streaming from the fashion capitals of New York, London, Milan and Paris (in that order).

While there will also be men’s and haute couture shows in Milan and Paris in January, we have no information as of yet on whether these shows be live streaming. But yes, we’ll be watching the skies! (And if you have a hot tip, let us know: contribute(at)liverunway.com!)

New York Fashion Week is now less than a month away. Meanwhile fashion weeks in Copenhagen, Stockholm and Brisbane are rollin’ out a bunch of new looks, so be sure to see those links.

Well, it was more of a “mini-season.”

Our fearless editor Samuel Schler was on board, covering the Paris Men’s and Haute Couture shows from his state-of-the-art iPad. And we provided links to all the live streams we could find for London, Paris and Milan.

(Can you believe that, when Pablo told Sam to “have fun,” Samuel had the nerve to say Paris Fashion Week was hard work? Maybe, Samuel, MAYBE. Pablo does seem to remember uploading pictures at 4 AM during Los Angeles Fashion Week, and wanting to cry, but that’s another story.)

But all this leads us to a number of questions posed by faithful readers.

One alert reader asks:

Dear Reader:

First of all, thank you. It’s totally true that we’re the best magazine ever. Wait, you didn’t say that, did you? Drat. We hate you now. No no, not really.

It’s true that the Big 4 (New York, London, Milan and Paris) have two dedicated fashion “weeks” per year, generally around February and September. (Not always a literal week. London’s, for example, is actually more like 4-5 days.)

However, the last four years have given rise to “pre-fall” collections presented in summer.

Milan has summer shows dedicated to Menswear. And Paris has two additional summer shows: Haute Couture (the fanciest stuff), and Menswear. This year the British Fashion Council got in on the Menswear act, as well, with London: Men’s Collections.

Why did this happen? A little birdie was able to point us in the direction of some information leading to this article, which explains how this important “pre-fall” season has come about in response to changing buying habits from consumers.

So you can read that, because it’s interesting, and then you can email us and tell us what you learned, because frankly we’re a little tired.

The clothes you see are for next season! Welcome to the confusing world of fashion week(s)!

No seriously, it’s not that bad.

When it’s Fall, you’re getting a look at clothes that will be available the following Spring.

That’s why, for example, when Pablo is sitting shivering in his unheated apartment, coughing, wearing a multicolor scarf covered with cat hair, and it’s late September, he’s watching “Spring 2013″ collections online and pretending he’s on a sailboat, somehow, improbably.

Rule of Thumb: The name of the fashion week is when the fashions will be available in stores.

It all has to do with tarot cards. Okay, we’re joking again and promise to shut up.

Trend forecasting is part art, part science. Skilled trend forecasters study social patterns, consumer behavior, and attend trade shows to see looks from other disciplines. And designers go from the “gut,” blending classical and cutting-edge looks that are part inspiration and part observation.

Also they have a special monkey’s paw locked in a Swiss vault, that points at, like, ideas.

Okay, we lied about the jokes.
